Wadelee Pony Stud - Matthew, Jessica & Eliza Herring
Jessica has been involved with horses all her life, starting at 4 years of age. Pony Club, Hunting, Showing, Dressage, she has tried her hand at everything, which has been a great grounding for her knowledge she carries with her today.
It was through her purchase of a 7mth old colt from Lia Blacket from Wynara Stud back in 2004, that she found a pony quiet enough to be a pleasure to work with, but with enough spunk & character to not be ‘too boring’. This colt became Wadelee Pony Stud’s resident Stallion, he is a 12.1 1/4hh Pony Stallion named ‘Wynara Talk of the Town’ or stable name Cooper.
Once broken in, Jess and Cooper haven’t looked back. Wadelee Pony Stud was established in 2008. Cooper is a ‘once in a lifetime pony’ for the stud, he does it all from Showing, Dressage, Trail Classes (he loves going over the timber bridge) Hunting, and when at the beach, he would give Ian Thorpe a run for his money, this Stallion LOVES to swim! He is such an easy going and talented stallion. There are only a few Part Welsh / Riding Pony Stallions competing out and about under saddle, so it is testament to his nature that he is easy going enough to handle the rigours of the Show & Dressage arenas without acting like a ‘real boy’. Although in spring, his warmup has been known to take a little longer...! Also, he has won an open hacking championship, Supreme Led on more than one occasion, (including at the SA All Welsh out of 35 ponies and under international judges) and Champion Dressage Pony at Werribee.
It is with his fantastic nature, the stud decided to breed from him, to produce Ponies suitable for Children to ride (with their fantastic natures) but with enough movement and presence that the same pony could happily be campaigned by an adult and come home with the blue ribbons.
The stud is very passionate about Ponies, in particular, the fast developing Australian Pony Dressage Scene. With Cooper’s small height, he can be crossed over some larger mares for some exceptional Warmblood Ponies that will still mature under the very important 14.2hh height limit for Pony Dressage. He has been called the ‘Mini Warmblood’ at just about every Dressage comp they have been to, so to cross such a quality, large moving small pony over Warmblood mares is sure to make some very exciting foals for the future.
With the birth of their first child ‘Eliza’ on good Friday, April 22, 2011, Jess had to take a short break from riding, but the stud grew during this time, with the purchase of new mares and 3 mares were put in foal. Matthew’s assistance & expertise in handling the Stallion whilist mating mares is amazing, with only himself and Jessica (even while she was pregnant) they work very well together to serve all mares, even during difficult matings of mares up to 15.3hh (to the 12.1hh stallion), they manage to get the mare into an appropriate ditch for cooper to be on a ‘level’ playing field. He is quite the ‘stud’ and loves his girls and is very easy to manage.
Wadelee now has 1 x 2009 foal and 3 x 2011 foals on the ground, with 4 mares PTIF for 2012 and one to go, so hoping for 5 x 2012 foals, two of which will be Warmblood x Part Welsh. Foaling commences in August and finishes in December for the stud.
It is with help from the fantastic team at Equine Chia Australia, the ponies are happy and healthy, with a beautiful shine to their coat. Our stallion is 8yo and has never seen a vet in his life, apart from a particularly wet January causing some mud fever on his clipped out white socks! That is testament to the positive effects Equine Chia has on the health of your horses and ponies. The required serving of Equine Chia each day has certainly helped keep the vet away from the stud! All resident mares are fed Equine Chia, 2 of which were maiden mares for 2011, and all foaled down beautifully without any assistance, or complications... or a vet! And best of all, looked a picture of health as do the foals.
Wadelee Pony Stud would thoroughly recommend Equine Chia to any horse or pony owner, it is really a wonder product that every horse owner should not do without.
Thank you Equine Chia Australia for your support to our small, but growing stud. It is very much appreciated.
Cheers to a long future together,
